HANDS OF WORKERS RIGHTS! RALLY IN MINSK

Minsk, October 2 – More than 1,000 trade union leaders and activists from various Minsk enterprises came together to the Congress Hall of the Belorussian Federation of Trade Unions to support BFTU leadership in struggle against the government interference.

The meeting was urgently called after closure of the BFTU bank accounts and storm of abusive anti-union articles in mass media controlled by the President Lukashenko. The Congress Hall was not big enough to met so many people and supporters of trade union independence has filled the corridors and recreation areas of the BFTU Headquarter building, listening to speeches via loud-speakers.

In his appeal to Minsk unionists Vladimir Goncharik, the BFTU President, explained the real ulterior motives of the authorities that brought to the bank account closure. He spoke about the incessant pressure which state authorities have brought on the unions on the eve of the BFTU congress, planned for October 10-11 and ILO mission to Belarus. Brother Goncharik was strongly supported by leaders of largest industrial unions who were present at the meeting.

Finally the participants have made a decision to organize massive protest actions over the whole country in defense of workers rights in Belarus. Tentatively it is planned to hold rallies, picket lines or strikes on October 19 that may coincide with the dates of the ILO mission to Belarus – on October 18-20.
