Press-Conference on the Outputs of the ICFTU
Delegation Visit to Minsk
July12, Minsk. A press-conference of Bill
Jordan, General Secretary of the International Confederation
of Free Trade Unions, on the outputs of the ICFTU delegation
visit to Belarus, was held today a 12.00 a.m. at the Trade
Unions Palace. The International trade union delegation
visited Belarus following a formal claim submitted by the
Belorussian trade unions to the International Organization
because of massive violations of labor rights in the Republic.
Shortly before the press-conference, the ICFTU
General Secretary had a meeting with the First Deputy Head of
the Belarus Presidential Administration, Prime Minister and
the Republican Minister of Justice. According to Bill Jordan,
the Belorussian authorities believe that, despite the
presented facts of violations, they do not consider the
alleged cases of putting pressure upon trade unions in the
Republic as problematic. As to shortcomings of the
registration system, the Belorussian Government considers the
latter as a removable technical issue.
Bill Jordan also said that the ICFTU has
always supported and will support the Belorussian trade unions
until the Republic gets rid of all violations of trade union
rights and liberties. The Belorussian party agreed to another
visit of a ICFTU delegation headed by the ILO Vice Director to
the Republic.
A meeting of representatives of ICFTU, ILO,
Federation of Trade Unions Belorussian, and International
Trade Union Secretariats, is scheduled for July 13. The
meeting will consider upcoming measures of the above
institutions related to the Belorussian claim to the ILO.
Michael Shmakov, Chairman of the Russian
Federation of Free Trade Unions, who visited Minsk at the same
time, stated that in the course of his forthcoming talks with
President Vladimir Putin scheduled for July 12, he is going to
raise the issue of violating trade union rights in Belarus.
