19/12/2000 On December 19, the Council of the State Duma of Russian Federation postponed consideration of a new Labour Code till March-April 2001. A special comission is to be created to choose one of four bills introduced to the State Duma as a basic and to amend it.

19/12/2000 The Sixth European Meeting of the ILO has adopted a Statement concerning Belarus.
The Statement was put forward by the workers' group and supported by the employers' group and 32 of 42 governments present. Only the governments of Belarus and Russia spoke against the statement.

12/12/2000 AGROCOMPLEX WORKERS UNION OF BELARUS CRITISIZES STATE AGRO POLICY, DISCUSS GLOBALISATION, WORKERS RIGHTS AND JOINS THE IUF

Minsk, December 6-7, 2000. Moscow, October 27 – Commission on Labour Disputes of the State Duma of the Russian Federation considered a conflict situation between McDonald’s administration and a trade union at the food processing plant McComplex. Since 1998 the union at McComplex stands upon workers’ rights to organize and to sign a collective bargaining agreement but McDonald’s administration was resistant and aggressively busted the union and its supporters. 08/10/2000 Belgian Unions support Belarus workers: Belarus Ambassador in Belgium Confirms That Lukashenko Violates Union Rights

Mikhail Shmakov, President of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia (FNPR) has sent letters to the leaders of the State, requesting them to raise before the supreme authorities of the Republic of Belarus the issue of unacceptability of the violation of rights of Belorussian workers and their trade unions. The letters were addressed to Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Kasyanov, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Egor Stroev, Chairman of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly, Gennady Seleznyov, Speaker of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the heads of the State Duma factions and deputy groups, and to Pavel Borodin, State Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Confederate State of Russia and Belarus.

The ICFTU demands from Belarus President to stop all interference into legitimate trade union activities, to ensure that the Congress of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus can take place as planned, to unblock the account of the organisation and to remove all threats against its leaders.

The ICFTU urges trade unions to support Belarus protest actions on October 19 by sending messages of solidarity, by making representations to the Belarus Embassies, by arranging demonstrations or picketing of the Embassies if possible, and by approaching their own governments.

October 2 -- Belarus unionists have supported the BFTU leadership in struggle against the government interference and have made a decision to organize massive
protest actions over the whole country in defense of workers rights in Belarus.

02/10/2000 Authorities have closed bank account of Trade Union Federation of Belarus on September 27th in order to increase pressure on the unions and make impossible BFTU Congress, which have been scheduled for October 10th. Trade union leaders are under threats of criminal charges.

Due to the latest events the international campaign of solidarity with Belarus trade unions changes its guiding line – from letters of support addressed to the BFTU to letters of protest addressed to the President of Belarus. Join the campaign, help to defend union rights in Belarus!

11/07/2000 Threats to the senior shop steward resulting from trade union activity at "Moscow-McDonald’s"

In connection with the denial of trade union rights, Natalia Gratcheva, the shop steward of the Food Processing and Distribution Centre "McComplex" has received threats of physical violence addressed to her and her young daughter. The IUF General Secretary Ron Oswald urged the Mayor of Moscow Yury Luzhkov to use his influence to oblige the "Moscow-McDonald’s" company management to observe Moscow City and Russian Federation legislation and to guarantee the safety of union members and the basic right to freedom of association to the workers at the company. More


A delegation of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions headed by the ICFTU Secretary General Bill Jordan is here on an official visit. The delegation visited Belarus in relation to a formal complaint submitted to the ILO by Belorussian trade unions because of massive violations of labor rights in the Republic. More
